Bernard Edward "Bernie" Diehl, born April 14, 1923, formerly of the Tri Village area, passed away on December 2, 2010. He was the sixth of nine children born to the late William and Lavina (Hall) Diehl of Marysville, Ohio. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1941 and served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant from 1943-1946. He received his BS from the College of Commerce of the Ohio State University in 1949. He was married for 48 years to Janet Louise Shaw, until her passing in 1998. He is survived by his daughters Sally Clutter, Jeri Diehl (William) Cusack and Kris (John) Lomonaco; grandchildren Katherine Cusack, Annie (Todd) Lovegrove, Rory (Jason) Weier, Kelly & Mallory Clutter, Kim & Josh Lomonaco; great grandson Neil Lovegrove; siblings Doris Goings, June Bockhorst and Charles Diehl; many nieces & nephews and dear friend Jean Bell. He was preceded in death by brothers Don and Frank, sisters Mary Musser, Bertha Davis, and Ruth Thacker, and son-in-law Monty Clutter. Bernie served as secretary-treasurer of a retail grocery chain in Gallipolis, OH before becoming the Assistant Executive Director of Finance and Control of the State Teachers Retirement System of Ohio. Upon retirement from STRS after 25 years, Bernie continued to support educators by serving on the Grandview Heights Board of Education and Marysville School Board. He also served on the Marble Cliff Village Council and was a longtime member of the Upper Arlington Rotary Club and Charity Newsies. His motto was "Busy minds are happy minds". Bernie volunteered for many years at First Community Village. In 1992 he received the WBNS "Time to Care" award for outstanding community service and was named one of Central Ohio's Top Volunteers. In 2003 he was selected as an Upper Arlington Super Senior award recipient. Bernie's innate empathy towards others was unparalleled and he found great joy and satisfaction from helping others. Friends may call to celebrate his life from 6pm to 9pm Friday December 17, 2010 at DEYO DAVIS FUNERAL HOME, 1578 W. First Ave., Grandview Hts. A private burial will follow.
