Robert Edwin Merkle, 98, of First Community Village, died February 10, 2021. He was born on June 25, 1922 in Elkview, WV, the son of Karl L. and Mabel K. Merkle. After graduating from High School in Tidioute, PA, Bob served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific during World War II. He was a graduate of Penn State University and a retired engineer from the Columbia Gas Company where he worked as a Registered Engineer and Surveyor. Bob was a member of Boulevard Presbyterian Church and a dedicated member of the Central Ohio Hiking Club and the Buckeye Trail Association. He received an award for hiking 5000 miles. No one else has even come close. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy Hughes Merkle and his brothers Jack and James. He is survived by his sister-in-law Stella Merkle and his niece Melanie of Crofton, MD as well as his good friends Marjorie Bohl and Michael McKinney of Columbus. Due to the Covid-19 restriction, there will be no memorial service. Private interment will be at Floydsburg Cemetery in Crestwood, KY (near Louisville).
